About

Earth to Fire is a collaboration between Troy Melville and Arto (Artosaurus).

Troy first began working with clay at the Tasmanian School of Art before building a career across the arts, film and food sectors. Pottery has remained a constant thread, a practice grounded in patience, repetition and the satisfaction of making things by hand.

Earth to Fire grew out of conversations about the kind of studio we wanted to see in Hobart: a well-run space where people can develop real skills, spend time at the wheel, and work steadily with clay.

The focus is on creating an environment where people can expand and refine their craft, whether they are completely new to pottery or returning to it after time away.

As the studio grows, Earth to Fire will be supported by a small team of instructors who share a commitment to craft, good teaching and an enjoyable studio culture.

Why Earth to Fire?

Clay is slow.

It asks for attention, patience and repetition. It can be frustrating. It can also be deeply grounding.

We wanted to create a studio that supports that process, not just quick outcomes, but long-term development.

Earth to Fire isn’t built around trends or novelty. It’s built around:

  • Clear systems

  • Thoughtful teaching

  • Community built through shared practice

We believe that when people are given time, tools and encouragement, their skills and confidence grow naturally.

An Inclusive Space

From the beginning, Earth to Fire was intended to be inclusive.

That means:

  • Beginners are genuinely welcome

  • Questions are encouraged

  • Experience is respected

  • Different creative paths are supported

Whether someone wants to make a single bowl well, explore sculptural forms, or simply work quietly with their hands after a long day, there is room for that here.

Looking Forward

Earth to Fire is still growing.

As the community builds, so will the opportunities, with more classes, specialised workshops, shared events and studio initiatives.

But at its core, the intention will remain the same:

To maintain a well-run, welcoming studio where craft is valued and people feel comfortable returning week after week.
